Der Bote Intro

First page of an issue of Der BoteThe weekly newspaper Der Bote (The Messenger) ran from 1924-2008.  It was founded by Dietrich H. Epp of Rosthern, Saskatchewan and was originally named Der Mennonitische Immigrantenbote. Its target audience was the diaspora of Mennonite immigrants who emigrated from the Soviet Union to Canada, Latin America, and Europe in the 1920s and 1940s. In 1947, Der Bote merged with the Christlicher Bundesbote and became an official paper of the General Conference Mennonite Church, with its Canadian headquarters (Conference of Mennonites in Canada) in Winnipeg.  The production of the paper moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1977 when Gerhard Ens became editor. The paper was a vital link connecting families and communities across Canada, Latin America and Europe. The paper provided readers with spiritual content, a space to talk about and discuss ideas, and promote cultural values. The paper was for the ordinary person (den Mann aus den Bänken.)  In 2000 it reduced its frequency to two issues per month.  In 1950 it had 4,500 subscribers, in the mid 1970s over 9,000, and at its closing in 2008, still a respectful 2,350 subscribers.
