The English language weekly newspaper, Canadian Mennonite was launched 3 July 1953, by printer D.W. Friesen & Sons of Altona, Manitoba and ran until 19 February 1971. The paper’s audience was an inter-Mennonite audience of young English-speaking Mennonites in western Canada and Ontario. An advisory board was established in 1959 and responsibility for the paper was moved to the Canadian Mennonite Publishing Company in 1962 that had 200 shareholders. In 1963 the non-profit Canadian Mennonite Association took over responsibility. In 1965 the publishing office moved from Altona to Winnipeg. Subscriptions peaked at 6,000 in 1966 and by 1971, 4,000. The last issue was February 19, 1971. To fill the communications gap the Mennonite Reporter was started and first published in August 1971.

Note: there was an error in the original numbering of the issues from 1956, leading to two distinct issues being labelled 'no. 19'. In order to differentiate between them without re-labelling the entire rest of the year's run in a sequence different from what appears on the physical records, the second 'issue 19' has been labelled '19a' where it appears on this website
